About Mountain View

Mountain View is a hub for many of the world’s leading tech companies, including Google and Intuit. Visitors and locals enjoy exploring the scenic trails of Shoreline Park, learning about the evolution of technology at the Computer History Museum, seeing a concert at the Shoreline Amphitheatre and exploring the many dining and shopping options on Castro Street.

Before the city became Mountain View, the land was home to the native Ohlone people. They lived on The San Francisco Peninsula for thousands of years before Spanish explorers arrived and began building missions in the late 18th century. In 1842, the Mexican land grant of Rancho Pastoria de las Borregas was given to Francisco Estrada and was later passed on to Mariano Castro. The town got its name from the scenic views of the nearby Santa Cruz Mountains and served as a stagecoach stop between the port city of San Francisco and San Jose. The town was officially incorporated on November 7, 1902. In the 1940s, it became home to NASA’s Ames Research Center, and by the 1950s, the city had transformed from a small farm town into a lively community. Today, Mountain View has become a cornerstone for technology and innovation in Silicon Valley.
