About Brisbane
The History Behind “The City of Stars”For thousands of years, the area was home to the Ohlone Tribe before the Spanish Conquistadors arrived in 1776. The area later became part of the Spanish and Mexican land grants, and in the early 1900s, the area was named Visitacion City. However, the name was too similar to San Francisco’s Visitacion Valley and was changed to Brisbane in the 1920s. Brisbane is known as “The City of Stars.” This nickname comes from a holiday tradition that started in 1939 of placing illuminated stars on the downhill side of the city’s homes and businesses. This tradition continues to this day, and many of the stars are kept up all year long.
Brisbane was officially incorporated as a city in 1961, and today it is home to approximately 4,400 people. The city is a popular destination for outdoor adventures. Both visitors and locals alike enjoy hiking at San Bruno Mountain State Park or spending the day kayaking on the bay. See the gazebo in Community Park, buy fresh produce at Brisbane’s weekly Farmers Market or wander by the city’s famed Fire Hydrant Plug Preserve. And if you’re traveling with your furry friends, be sure to stop by Brisbane Dog Park.
