About Foster City, CA

Before it was Foster City, the area was marshland known as Brewer Island. In 1958, T. Jack Foster had a vision to turn the land into a master-planned waterfront community. This was a massive undertaking that required millions of dollars in investment and 2.5 million yards of material to create the 218-acre lagoon. The lagoon’s drainage system was designed to withstand a storm of "100-year return frequency,” which has worked extremely well as Foster City has never experienced draining flooding.

The city was officially incorporated in 1971. Today, Foster City is known for its friendly neighborhoods and outdoor water activities. Come discover the city’s locally-loved restaurants, great shopping centers, picturesque parks and beautiful lagoon where you can go kayaking, windsurfing or even rent an electric boat. Need another reason to visit? Foster City is one of the safest cities in America and was named the 8th safest city in California.
