About San Bruno
Like much of The San Francisco Peninsula, San Bruno was once the home of the Ohlone people, a group of Native Americans who lived along the coast between Monterey and San Francisco. In the 1820s, the San Bruno land was awarded to Jose Antonio Sanchez by the Mexican Government and was later purchased by Darius Mills, the founder of the Bank of California. The city was officially incorporated in 1914 and remained a rural town until the 1940s. During World War II, the Tanforan Racetrack became a temporary internment center, and in 1971, the racetrack was redeveloped as The Shops at Tanforan.
Today, San Bruno is known for its close proximity to SFO, tech innovation and beautiful views of the Bay. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking the city's many trails at San Bruno Mountain State & County Park, Sweeney Ridge and Junipero Serra County Park. The city is also home to major tech companies like YouTube. And while you can’t go inside, you can snap a pic of the headquarters sign.
